How to Vote in GHI’s 2021 Elections

Prepare to Vote

GHI’s 2021 Annual Membership Meeting is almost here so get ready to vote!

As reported in the April 26, 2021 issue of GHI E-News, there are 7 candidates for only 5 open positions on the GHI Board of Directors so voting is crucial to our community’s future. You can vote even if you have only one favorite candidate.

Also, as of April 26th, there were just enough candidates to fill all 5 open positions for the Nominations & Elections Committee. The Audit Committee still needed one candidate to fill its 3 open positions.

I registered to attend the GHI Annual Membership Meeting and read the meeting packet to learn more about how to vote for this year’s slate of candidates. Below are excerpts from the packet that I found especially useful.

I hope this helps you successfully cast your ballot!

Thinking About Running in the 2020 GHI Election?

The GHI Nominations and Elections Committee is still accepting candidates for the 2020 GHI Elections.  Members can run for Board of Directors, Audit Committee, or Nominations and Elections Committee.  The following positions are available:

  • Board of Directors: 4 positions with 2 current candidates (as of 4/13/2020)
  • Audit Committee: 3 positions with 3 current candidates (as of 4/13/2020)
  • Nominations and Elections Committee: 5 positions with 4 current candidates (as of 4/13/2020)

The May 14, 2020 Annual Meeting has been postponed; this means that the deadlines for candidacy applications have also been postponed.  Applications will be accepted up to 14 days prior to the Annual Meeting (rescheduled date TBD).  See the GHI website for more information and to get the candidate’s packet: https://www.ghi.coop/content/ghi-elections.

Proxy Voting and the 2019 GHI Annual Membership Meeting

You probably know that GHI’s 2019 Annual Membership Meeting is almost here! Do you know how to make sure that your vote is counted if you cannot attend the meeting?

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 9, 2019. Check-in begins at 7:00 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Greenbelt Community Center Gym (15 Crescent Road).

If no member in your household (a person listed on your Mutual Ownership Contract) can attend the Annual Meeting, you can give your proxy to another GHI member who will attend. That member can register your vote on business matters and elections conducted during the meeting.

Get a proxy form at the GHI management office by Thursday, May 2, 2019.

Proxy forms must be submitted by one of two deadlines:

May 2, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. to the GHI management office or

May 4, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. to GHI Board Secretary Ed James (56-D Crescent Road).

Absentee ballots are another way to participate in elections if you cannot attend the Annual Meeting but they DO NOT record your vote for/against motions.

For example, at the 2018 meeting, members were asked to vote on a motion to protect GHI woodlands. You could NOT register your vote unless you were physically in the room or submitted the paperwork to give your proxy to another member who was in the room.

Why pass up a chance to use your voice?

See you at the meeting!
